Last month NYPD officer Michael Reynolds was charged with aggravated criminal trespassing and assault after breaking into a home near an Airbnb he was renting in Tennessee.

Reynolds, who is white, broke into the home of a black family and went on a racist tirade. Calling the residents of the home, Conese Halliburton and her four sons, “f–king n—ers” and threatened to “break every f—ing bone in your f—ing neck.” Halliburton’s youngest sons were reportedly 8 and 11 at the time. The rampage was captured on a neighbor’s surveillance video, the paper reports. Reynolds testified that he had been drinking before the incident and didn’t remember encounter.

He pleaded no contest to charges and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and three years of probation.

Public outcry for the termination of the NYPD officer has grown since he was sentenced on December 6. An online petition requesting Reynolds be fired received over 12,000 signatures.

On December 30 Reynolds was told to report to police headquarters for the commencement of an official disciplinary process on January 2 but instead of attending he quit. Acting Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Devora Kaye said in a statement released to CBS News on Thursday that the resignation is effective immediately.

“He will receive no pension or health benefits, nor will he be allowed to carry a firearm,” the statement said. “His actions are wholly inconsistent with the values and standards the New York City Police Department expects and demands of its officers.”
