The city of New Braunfels is now accepting applications for New Braunfels City University, a program that gives residents firsthand experience working with city government.

The program curriculum is built to inform participants and increase their involvement in local government through committees, boards and commissions, according to a city news release.

Meetings will take place Thursday nights beginning Jan. 9, including programs related to the city airport, attorney’s office, city manager, fire/EMS, the public library system, community development and more.

“City university is an interactive learning experience designed to promote transparency,” said Nokihomis Willis, New Braunfels human resources director. “The hands-on experiences, case studies, site tours, group discussions and demonstrations provide a unique understanding of municipal operations. Our hope is that, through participation in city university, citizens are encouraged to participate more fully in local government.”

City university applications can be found at www.nbtexas.org/cityuniversity, and paper applications are available 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at New Braunfels City Hall, 550 Landa St., or by contacting Adam Kinyicky at 830-221-4392. Previously submitted paper applications for the 2020 program are still being considered.

Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Dec. 6. All applicants must be at least 17 years of age and a city resident or resident of the New Braunfels extraterritorial jurisdiction.
